The much anticipated iOS 8 was shown on June 2 and will be released around September 17 this year. Tim Cook, CEO at Apple had taken to the stage at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco to bring out the latest iteration of its newest OS, iOS 8.

Last year 800 million iOS devices were sold. In this article, I am picking up the most interesting iOS 8 features that keep them aside from the earlier version and tempts us to play with it on the iPhone, iPad Air and the iPad Mini.

The first difference is the interactive notifications. No matter if it is from the lock screen or from the home screen, you will find iOS 8 letting you interact with applications in a more productive way. Music playback can be controlled without leaping into the home screen, swiping below the top of home screen lets you see notifications and watch your favorite contacts. Benefit is that you can call or message contacts without abandoning the app you are using.

The next is regarding the redefinition of your electronic communication, mail. Features in mail are fetched from Mac OS Yosemite features plus a navigational sidebar is added. Single motion support to delete and flag mails and prompts for adding events to calendar are also possible. QuickType features of iOS 8 lets you to send out faster responses. Personalised options offer suggestions on your next words helping to respond quicker.

In the section of messages, and more into group messaging, you can name threads. In case you do not want to hang on conversation you can set up a ‘do not disturb’ mode. Moreover, User Interface of Messages comprises of new detail sections from where you can view locations of other people engaged in conversation and all picture attachments associated with it.

WhatsApp styled Tap-to-Talk feature has also been introduced by Apple. You can now hold the mic button, record a message, slip it up and then either send or add that to a conversation. Photos and videos can also be shared in the same way.

Healthkit is available for monitoring health and fitness metrics. Health apps need third party app support. Nike is one of the first companies to integrate its own service named Nike Plus with Healthkit. Apple is currently working with healthcare institutions for partnerships.

As Apple believes in sharing, it comes with a feature called Family Sharing where you can share photo streams, reminders and calendars with six family members on a single device. Find My Friends can be accessed to find the other family devices’ location. What’s interesting in this feature is that if the purchase is made from the same credit card, purchases made by all family members can be viewed. If a younger iOS user makes an endeavor to buy an app, the parent will get a notification asking permission for the purchase.
